Ingmar Bergman’s classic traces the journey of a 14th century knight and his squire returning from The Crusades to their native Sweden. Pauline Kael said that “in this magically powerful film the story seems to be playing itself out in a medieval present.”
Monday, August 16 7 pm MUSIC: THE SOUL OF MUSCLE SHOALS
In the 1960s, a series of small studios sprang up in a sleepy Alabama town, producing records by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Percy Sledge, and Clarence Carter that captured the imagination of the world. Soon The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alicia Keys, and many others were clamoring to record there, too. We’ll explore some of the performances set down there in the classic soul years.

This month our poetry group examines how a variety of poets have celebrated nature’s gift of blossoms in gardens and in the wild.
Thursday, August 26 7 pm FILM FORUM: SUNSET BOULEVARD. One of writer/director Billy Wilder’s masterpieces, this movie is a powerful blend of film noir, Hollywood satire, and classical tragedy. Starring silent era star Gloria Swanson as an aging studio diva and the young William Holden as the aspiring screenplay writer who unwittingly becomes ensnared in her life.
Monday, August 30 7 pm MUSIC: SATCHMO SINGS!: THE VOCAL ART OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG. He was the first great jazz improvisor and a titan of trumpet playing who influenced almost every jazz musician who followed him. Learn how Armstrong also forged a vocal style that inspired artists such as Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, and Louis Prima.
